News from Graduate School & Faculty of Social Sciences in Details
Our guest on 19 October is Åsa Eriksson, doctoral fellow at Department of Ethnology, History of Religions and Gender studies at Stockholm University. The title of her seminar is: Gender, Work, Resistance: Farmworkers in post-strike Western Cape, South Africa.
The seminar will start off with a conversation on ”the logic and operation of capital in the contemporary global arena” (Mohanty 2003: 167), which seems especially important in light of the debate on inequality, identity politics, activism and social change going among feminists and anti-racist activists at the moment.
The theme of this seminar is a pressing one - the Swedish group Livsmedelsarbetare för Solidaritet (Food workers for solidarity) just called for a boycott of Robertson’s Winery, due to the harsh working conditions in the province of Western Cape, South Africa, and as a display of solidarity with the workers there struggling for their rights.
The theme of the Gender Studies Open Seminar is Gender, Class and Capital - Intersectional theories in times of austerity.

Lisa Kings received her PhD in Sociology from Stockholm University in collaboration with Södertörn University in 2011, with a thesis on civil mobilization in the Swedish urban periphery. She is currently a senior lecturer in social work at the School of Social Sciences at Södertörn University. Her presentation will draw on two durrently ongoing research projects Urban justice movements financed (funded by FORMAS) and the social mechanisms of creating memberless civil society organizations in Sweden, Russia and Poland (financed by VR). The presentation will address topics such as the opportunities and obstacles for urban justice movements to gain influence and participate in democratic processes in Swedish urban suburbs and how grassroots mobilization that addresses issues of segregation, racism and welfare transformation have developed in Swedish cities.

Seminarieserien Forskning på gång, där institutionens forskare presenterar pågående forskning under enkla former, griper över institutionens samtliga forskningsmiljöer, ämnen och inriktningar.
Analytiska, metodologiska och teoretiska problem och möjligheter, nya och framtida publikationer, projektidéer och forskningsfrågor, överraskande eller tankeväckande fynd, spännande material, begrepp, perspektiv eller teorier – det finns en uppsjö tänkbara teman!
Varje seminarium startar prick klockan 12 i Konferensrum 1, varar endast en timme och deltagarna får gärna ta med sig egen lunchmat. Presentatören håller i seminariet som avrundas med en liten diskussionsstund.
Tanken är att inspirera och uppmuntra fortsatt forskning samt stimulera det allmänna forskningsintresset på institutionen.

Her principal research interest is in the politics and social impacts of nature conservation in India, as part of a wider interest in the political economy of nature conservation. Besides her ethnographic work in Northern India (Nanda Devi biosphere reserve, Khasi Hills Redd+ project), she has been actively following the development of international expertise on biodiversity offsets, as well as the involvement of business in biodiversity (Rio 2012) and climate COPs (Paris 2015).

Sam Holmqvist is PhD student in Comparative Literature, currently working on a project about the history of transgender literature.
Sam Holmqvist's dissertation concerns transitions of sex and gender in 19th century Swedish prose fiction. There are several depictions of cross-dressings gender variations in fiction. But there is seldom much talk of transgender literature, and so far no one has written a Swedish transgender history of literature. Holmqvist’s dissertation is an attempt to change that.
Holmqvist’s dissertation studies a wide range of fiction in order to establish a pattern of the cross-dressing motif, and to discuss its implications for contemporary transgender readings. The primary objects of analysis are novels by romanticist Carl Jonas Love Almqvist and crime writer Aurora Ljungstedt, and the autobiography by Sweden’s wide known thief and cross-dresser Lars Molin (Lasse-Maja).

With this issue we aim to create a platform for a transversal dialogue of transgender studies and new materialism. However, it is important to stress that people do not need to feel limited by the use of new materialism, since we are looking for various interpretations of accounts on matter/materiality and transgender lives.
We welcome submissions of work by MSc/MA/MS, MPhil, PhD students, academics in precarious positions and independent researchers, artists, collectives, and activists. We especially welcome contributions from indigenous and/or people of colour, and/or trans and/or non-binary people, and perspectives from post-Soviet contexts and the Global South. We encourage collaborative and collectively authored pieces.
Deadline for abstracts is 4th November 2016.

In Visby program offers Swedish Institute scholarship for students, researchers and other key people working at a Swedish university wishing to study or do research in any of our partner countries.
Between 3 to 31 October 2016, the outgoing Swedes apply for a scholarship in Visby Program for stays in one of the program countries - Estonia, Georgia, Latvia, Lithuania, Moldova, Poland, Russia, Ukraine and Belarus. The stay will begin in spring 2017 at the earliest (in January).
