The idea that people who receive benefits from the welfare system should also be involved in decision-making and policy processes is now common within neo-liberal social politics. This presentation will revolve around Erik Eriksson’s dissertation project, which is a study of how the so-called “user involvement” is implemented within two welfare organizations; a psychiatric unit and a municipal social-services provider. The study shows that while the concept creates some possibilities for users to influence the decision-making process, it is also severely limited and controlled by the organizations. Erik’s results will be discussed from a Crip as well as an Intersectional perspective.

Acquiring good writing skills is essential for your success both at university and in your professional life. The course “Writing in English at University” has been designed as a resource for university students who are involved in or wish to prepare for writing assignments or degree projects. As writing conventions differ between disciplines the focus is on generic skills of academic writing. The course covers different aspects of academic writing, such as how to structure your text and how to convey your argument, as well as how to use sources and how to edit your text. The course aims to provide guidance to all students, but will be especially useful to those with English as second language.

Prof. Dr. Dick Douwes, Dean of Erasmus School of History, Communication and Culture (ESHCC), Erasmus University Rotterdam, the Netherlands

Present-day tensions and violence in the Middle East are often defined as being sectarian and, in fact, several parties that are involved in warfare in Syria, Iraq, Yemen and elsewhere have a sectarian discourse and perform sectarianism through violent–at times severely cruel–symbolic action, the most obvious case being the Islamic State (IS) having staged an seemingly apocalyptic battle based upon a radical reading of the religious past and present, legitimizing the killing of ‘unbelievers’, the degradation of their women to slavery, the destruction of shrines, churches, monasteries, etc.. But sectarian reasoning and action are not the prerogative of IS and other Jihadist movements, as its adversaries, too, including various regimes in the region, invoke images from an imaginary past in their slogans and use–apart from lethal military violence– violence such as desecrating and destroying what is held sacred by the other, including the killing of religious leaders and the destruction of mosques. Within the pro-regime war cult the shrine of Sayyida Zaynab occupies a central position for Shiite millitants from Lebanon, Iraq, Afghanistan and elsewhere who have flocked to the Sayyida Zaynab neighbourhood, a southern suburb of Damascus, in an effort to re-enact Shiite historicy as an act of empowerment of the community.

This book raises the issue of what is required to make welfare societies ecologically sustainable. Co-authored by a variety of cross-disciplinary contributors it is the result of opportunity to assemble an interdisciplinary team of researchers from five Lund University faculties as well as Kate Soper, Hubert Buch-Hansen and Ian Gough, who wrote the preface, and to work together for eight months at the Pufendorf Institute for Advanced Studies.
