Seminar: The Visual Capacities of Embodied Difference: Disability Representation in Online Media

Maria Bee Christensen-Strynø is a doctoral candidate at Roskilde University in the Department of Communication Studies

Online platforms and social media have increasingly become central sites of our everyday visual practices, which have been identified as contributing to the acceleration and advancement of community-based communication forms. The convergence of image-focused internet cultures and disability communities give rise to new questions about how online imageries invite new forms of disability representation, for instance, through visual self-narration, self-presentation and self-commodification.

Building upon and expanding on a conventional critical focus on disability representation in the media, which often points to a recurrent underrepresentation and problematic reductive labels and categorisations of disabled embodiment and identity, Maria Bee Christensen-Strynø’s research explores how online imageries preserve and challenge traditional and dominant notions of disability and bodily diversity in the digital era.

Sara Eldén & Terese Anving will present some of the findings in their forthcoming book Caring complexities. Nannies, parents and children in Sweden (Policy Press 2018). Lecture: Feminist fieldwork – power, learning and the politics of friendship in intercultural fieldwork

Otso Harju, PhD candidate in gender studies at the University of Helsinki, Finland

Harju’s earlier and upcoming fieldwork among young feminist women in Delhi includes a number of positional problems around gender, racialization, postcoloniality, class, and caste. His PhD dissertation looks at how highly educated, middle-to-upper class, upper-caste feminist friends cope with and contest gendered political conflicts in their families. At the core of the study is also a self-reflexive investigation into the meanings of inequality, responsibility, maleness, and friendship in social research.

With this as a starting point, Harju’s guest lecture looks at privilege, access and voice in hierarchical academia and asks who should speak and get credit, where, and how. The lecture explores the many pitfalls as well as the possible liberatory potential of learning and humility in ethically complex ethnography. Moving beyond pure criticism, it muses around transnational feminist theory as well as bell hook’s thoughts on collaboration and education as a practice of freedom. These are used for asking if and how researchers can work against the sexism and racism of their own socializations.

Public Lecture Malmö: Citizenship and immigrant integration: reward or incentive?

Maarten Vink, Guest Professor in Memory of Willy Brandt at MIM, Malmö University in 2017-2018, and Professor of Political Science at Maastricht University.

Can citizenship provide a boost to immigrant integration and, if so, how? In this lecture I discuss the controversial and complex relation between the naturalization of immigrants and their integration within the host society. This relationship is ideologically controversial because some politicians view citizenship as a reward for being a well-integrated immigrant, whereas others see the promise of full membership of the new country of residence and the entitlement to all the rights attached to it as a major incentive for the process of integration. It is also scientifically complex to investigate this question because it is often unclear whether citizenship leads to better integration of immigrants or, vice versa, whether immigrants who are already better integrated are just more likely to naturalize. I discuss key concepts and theories, some comparative facts about citizenship policies in Europe, and findings from ongoing research.

Seminar Malmö: Racializing Sweden: On the non-white, contemporary Swedish literature and stories of a new Swedishness

Tobias Hübinette, associate professor at the department of Language, Literature and Interculture at Karlstad University.

Since the 1990s, approximately 80 Swedish titles have been published in the form of books in Sweden by non-white Swedes. The growing number of titles consists above all of novels and autobiographies, and among the writers one finds immigrants, children of immigrants, people of mixed origin and foreign adoptees. This literature is commonly referred to as the Swedish “immigrant literature”, but in this presentation emphasis is put on what these works reveal about contemporary Sweden, about the majority Swedes and about Swedish whiteness. The theoretical framework of the presentation derives from critical race and whiteness studies. Against the backdrop of existing research on race, whiteness and Swedishness, and through a selection of texts, the Tobias Hübinette examines how new perspectives on Swedishness and new constructs of Swedishness are expressed and narrated in relation to the non-white writers themselves, and, above all, to the new, multiracial Sweden.

At 09:15, Refugee Policy as ‘Negative Nation Branding’; at 10:00 Trust Us: Reproducing the Nation and the Scandinavian Nationalist Populist Parties; and at 11:00 From Citizenship to Mobile Commons : Reflections on the Local Struggles of Migrants in Malmö, Sweden.

This is the second seminar in the Pufendorf IAS initiative to forward interdisciplinary migration research focuses on the politics of migration, especially on institutions and political movements in Scandinavia. The Pufenforf initiative aims to explore new conceptual, theoretical approaches as well as methodological innovations to address processes linked to migration. The Pufendorf IAS invites researchers from all faculties into dialogue on crosscutting issues on migration such as ecology, politics, archeology and medicine. The ambition is to create a network of researchers with an interest in exploring this area further.

Seminar: The Right to Food, Land and Seeds

Aina and Emma from the NGO "Afrikagrupperna"

Agrarian transformation is a dynamic and complex task in post-aparthied South Africa. Inequalities in land distribution, access to water and agricultural input put non-white farmers at a gross disadvantage. In which ways can such inequalities be mitigated and how can sustainable food production be instigated? This seminar will discuss the concept of food sovereignty and how the current global food system affects the most vulnerable populations in South Africa. The seminar discussion will be led by Aina and Emma from the NGO Afrikagrupperna; and they will share their experiences on the themes of land, food and rights after working with the Cape Town based farmers-rights organization Surplus People Project. This seminar is organized by the Association of African Affairs AAFRA and the NGO Afrikagrupperna

"Sex, Violence and Women's Rights" - Movie screening and conversation

Welcome to watch the movie 'Parched' followed by a conversation with Maria Tonini and Sarah Bodelson! ABC will serve snacks from Nepal and India during the screening.

Tickets are free but need to be collected at Kino (limited number of seats). Subtitles will be in English. 

Parched is a story about women set in the heart of parched rural landscape of Rajasthan, India. The film tells the story of women who begin to question the oppressive rules in traditional society that favor men, send child brides to abusive husbands, and ostracize women for being opinionated and educated. Together, the women take bold steps to change the trajectory of their lives for the better. 

The drama film is written and directed by Leena Yadav, produced by Ajay Devgan and filmed by Russell Carpenter (known for “Titanic” and Ant-Man”).

Speakers: 

  • Dr. Maria Tonini is a SASNET postdoctoral researcher. She works with issues of gender, sexuality, femininity and masculinity in contemporary India. 
  • Sarah Bodelson is a master student at the program Social Studies of Gender at Lund University and a board member of the nongovernmental organization Swallows India Bangladesh.
