Development Research Day: Ending Hunger and Achieving Food Security by 2030

The theme of the conference addresses the second of the sustainable development goals (SDG 2): End hunger, achieve food security and improved nutrition and promote sustainable agriculture. Still today, almost 800 million people in the world do not have enough food to lead an active and healthy life. The vast majority live in developing countries. It is currently widely agreed that there are a number of dimensions of food and nutrition security that needs to be fulfilled simultaneously in order to eradicate hunger and to reduce food insecurity globally. Dietary change related to increasing incomes and migration to urban areas adds to the complexity of the situation. In many developing countries there is a high prevalence of both undernutrition and overnutrition.

External News & Events in Details

Ms. Meskerem Geset Techane, a human rights expert from Ethiopia, is coming to the RWI on Thursday to discuss how human rights monitoring can be improved with the help of national institutions.

The Raoul Wallenberg Institute has changed the way human rights are protected and promoted by contributing to the global rise of the number of National Human Rights Institutions (NHRIs) from a handful in the early 1990s to over 100 today. The Institute has worked with development and capacity building with over 20 national human rights institutions throughout Sub-Saharan Africa and Asia.

Indeed, NHRIs are increasingly recognized for their role as key independent actors in monitoring human rights. They are being gradually integrated into not only domestic human rights systems but also into global and regional human rights systems.

While the role of NHRIs has been traditionally conceptualized in the context of monitoring civil and political rights, the conventional deliberations on economic and social rights (ESR) implementation have been much focused around the role of judiciary and supranational mechanisms. Taking into account the considerable gaps left by judicial bodies and other human rights actors in ESR implementation, arguments have emerged in support of the unique contribution of NHRIs in this field. With development induced or business related ESR violations comes new challenged, and there is a growing interest in non-judicial accountability and implementation mechanisms where NHRIs can expand their role.

The seminar will explore this potential by drawing some experiences from Africa and beyond.

Date: November 3rd, 2016

Time: 14:00-15:00

Venue: Beijing Room, Raoul Wallenberg Institute

AAFRA gladly invites you to watch a truly Malawian production tackling the understanding of some of the modernization and democratization processes in Africa. The 90-minute film "Seasons of a life" by Shemu Joyah from 2008 won several African Film awards and is so far the only internationally available film from the small country in southeast Africa. It is a drama of a housemaid, who is sexually abused and made pregnant by her boss. She is forced to give up her son in order to go on with her education. Six years later she comes back to claim her son. It is a moving story about sexual abuse, women's rights and the legal justice system in Malawi.

For everyone of interest you're most welcome to stay for a discussion led by our member Gregor Rahn, who himself has lived in Malawi for one year.

Entrance: AAFRA-  members: FREE, Students with student-ID: 20 SEK, Others: 30 SEK
