We hope you've had a good winter break and been able to spend time with friends, family, or other pursuits that help you wind down. We look forward to this term, which tends to get busier and busier as the weeks roll by, and before you know it it's already June. We hope you make an effort to take time out for yourself and treat yourself to whatever it is that allows you to recharge your batteries- a walk in the woods, exercise, music, friends, movies, etc. As always, if you have ideas of events to organize, have concerns about a course of programme, or just want to talk with one of us at Graduate School, don't hesitate to make an appointment with any of us, either through email or LiveatLund.

The DPS programme is now finalized and available on our website here.

Join a discussion with Jonas Grimheden on 27 January about the human rights implications of the European Union’s new instruments aimed at countering terrorism. Jonas Grimheden is a Senior Policy Manager at the European Union’s human rights advisory body, the Agency for Fundamental Rights (FRA), located in Vienna, Austria. Grimheden says that following on from the terrorist attacks in Europe the last couple of years in particular, European Union action is needed to facilitate common cross-border cooperation. He says the tragic events have also led to stronger momentum for the Member States to agree to more resolute action.

Due to this, a number of EU instruments countering terrorism are being adopted, importantly the Directive on combating terrorism.

“While the aim of these are good, the context and the speed at which they are adopted risk undermining the effectiveness of the measures,” he says. “Human rights concerns are central in this respect, including the presumption of innocence and freedom of expression. What are the main problems, how do they come about and what could be done to improve the situation?”

The first part of the session will be an open lecture followed by an open discussion and questions from the audience. Karol Nowak, Doctor of Laws and Director of the Master’s program in International Human Rights Law at Lund University, will moderate the session.

Welcome to a weekend music festival with 20 premieres including concerts, art music and lectures!

Lund Contemporary 2017 is a weekend festival for contemporary art music, organised by Odeum and Skissernas Museum – Museum of Artistic Process and Public Art, both part of Lund University, together with a number of local and regional participants.

The weekend will include more than 20 premieres by music composition students from the Malmö Academy of Music and others. New music by mainly regional composers will be interspersed with modern art music classics from the 20th century and onwards in a diverse programme. Another theme of the festival is the interaction between music and visual arts, with a particular focus on Skissernas Museum’s collection of art from the World Exhibition in Paris in 1937 – an event strongly marked by the dark political tensions at that time.

Music composed specially for the World Exhibition will be played over the weekend. In addition to concerts, Lund Contemporary offers lectures and a panel discussion on topics linked to the theme of the festival.

Admission to all events is free!
