News from Graduate School & Faculty of Social Sciences in Details

The presentation builds on my research seminar presentation in 2016, still asking what kinds of mobilization practices can be found in quotidian activities beyond the explicitly political. The newly suggested framing concept for such processes is entitled banal mobilization.

Venue: Pufendorf institute, 2nd floor, Biskopsgatan 3, Lund

Meetings between sex workers and clients take place in many ways, one of the most common being on social media. This seminar explores how sellers and buyers interact in social media, not only to agree on physical meetings but also to negotiate general rules which are in their common interest.

This seminar will discuss how, despite it being illegal to purchase sexual services in Sweden and the selling of sexual services is not being recognized as work, sex clients and sex workers meet on social media to pursue joint interests and negotiate “collective contracts” concerning the rules that should apply on the prostitution market. What framings are brought forward and what collective identities are negotiated?

Marie obtained my Ph.D. with a dissertation on central – local government relations within the migration area at Lund University in 2002. She worked as a lecturer at the Department of Political Science and began working for the Swedish Migration Agency in 2005. Since 2008 she has been working as a national coordinator for the Swedish national as contact point to the European Migration Network (EMN). The EMN provides objective, up-to-date, relevant and comparable information on Migration to Europe by producing studies, responding to ad-hoc queries and analysing the information to make it useful for policy makers both at European and national level. This line of work means quite a lot of travelling, mostly to Brussels but also to other capitals of the EU member states, and professional and personal relations with colleagues from all over Europe.

The lecture will focus first and foremost on what it is like to be a Swedish civil servant in the European migration context and what it takes to cooperate with migration experts from 27 other countries. Secondly what happened within the migration field during 2015 will be discussed together with different priorities at EU and Member state level and how they develop and influence the work of the EMN.

To attend this seminar, sign up via https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSdXh4FeAE_vIenWZGMkWLdUtHJ9HvL… no later than March 24th, 2017.

Date: March 27th, 2017
Time: 14:00-16:00
Venue: TBA

European countries are currently revising their laws on issues to do with sexuality, such as prostitution, rape, and grooming. While the developments are very different throughout the region, they all point to how European countries are significantly more invested in policy-making in the field of sexuality than previously. Sexuality and gender are also topics taken up in the EU Parliament and addressed through resolutions and framework decisions.

The EU continuously balances which issues should be harmonised and which should be guided by national agendas and priorities, and if we in fact are seeing more EU level involvement in these issues, this means that particular ways of defining and regulating gender and sexuality more than before are seen as a part of European identity. The flurry of national and EU level policy making and debate indicates to us that something is at stake, and in this presentation I will look into what this might be.

Date: March 28th, 2017

Children are taken care of by nannies and au pairs all over the world. Paid domestic care plays an important role when families try to solve work/family conflicts, especially so when more and more middle class women take on demanding careers.

In our research project ”Care for children in an era of private market service” (RJ) we analyse the practice of doing care and family in families who hire nannies and au pairs. The study has been carried out in Sweden; a context where private solutions of nannies and au pairs have previously been uncommon due to the vast prevalence of publicly funded day care. However, the last decade, neo-liberal challenges to the social-democratic welfare regime has resulted in a (re)introduction of, and a growing acceptance for, hiring domestic workers. This, we argue, makes Sweden a particularly interesting case to study.

To grasp the complexity of this practice, we have interviewed all participating actors: nannies/au pairs, parents and children. This enables us to compare and contrast the ways in which the participants look upon and experience the caring situation in the family. Including narratives of children currently receiving care by nannies and au pairs is novel, and makes our research a pioneer contribution to the field.

This interdisciplinary symposium is aimed at shedding light on how the sound environment may affect children spanning from the prenatal stage to the young person enjoying loud music or engaging in other loud activities. More seldom do we ask how the child him/herself perceives the sound environment. The Sound Environment Center at Lund University takes a holistic grasp on childrens´ chronological exposure to sound and noise, Research on childrens´ exposure to sound and noise today includes many different disciplines, like audiology, acoustics, logopedy psychology, environmental medicine and neuroscience. Top researchers from these fields are taking part in this symposium. The child´s exposure to sound will be scrutinzed both in detail and at meta levels.

Since the advent of the so-called “war against terror,” Sufi shrines in Pakistan have been attacked, supposedly by factions of the Taliban or ISIS affiliated groups. The most recent suicide attack took place at the shrine of the major saint Lal Shahbaz Qalandar on February 16, 2017 and claimed the lives of more than 80 people. In this presentation I shall attend to some of the Sufi responses to, and absorption of, these kinds of events in order to explore some of the multiple political forms of Sufi Islam in Pakistan. Sufism is often described as the ‘spiritual’ and ‘soft’ dimension of Islam. Moreover, Sufi followers in Pakistan – the majority of the country’s almost 195 million people – are frequently characterized as disengaged in worldly affairs, if not outright apolitical. Based on twelve months of ethnographic fieldwork in Lahore between 2009 and 2012 for my PhD thesis, I argue that Sufi cosmological concepts and practices also amount to more or less explicit forms of political activities and visions. Through an ethnographic exploration of the ways in which Sufi followers conceive the world and the cosmos to be governed, I attempt to answer the question: What are Sufis’ own politics? I suggest that practices of deliberate passivity, self-cleansing ritual practices (such as zikr or recollection of Allah), the search for peace and tranquility (sukoon) and, above all, love are all different forms of what I call ‘cosmological activism.’

This workshop aims to introduce Bayesian (Belief) Networks to students and researchers. We will provide a theoretical background together with hands on exercises from risk and impact assessments and decision making.

Target audience: Undergraduate and graduate students and researchers interested in learning how to build and use Bayesian (Belief) Networks to integrate evidence, assess risk or impacts, and evaluate decision alternatives. We will use examples from environmental risk and impact assessments, but the scope of the workshop is BNs with no particular type of application. No previous experience in BNs is needed. Participants are encouraged to study a literature list sent out prior to the workshop.

Motivation: A Bayesian Network is a modelling framework that enable us to integrate evidence to inform decisions, based on causal relations between decision, state and impact variables. BNs allows integration of data and expert knowledge.

The objective of the Summer University Prague 2017, “ Understanding Europe in an Age of Uncertainty”, is to provide students with a broad understanding of the most significant political and social issues in contemporary Europe.

Instead of relaxing at the “End of History” after the collapse of Eastern Bloc in 1989, Europe is facing new challenges at the beginning of the 21st century. These new challenges – including the economic and financial crisis, ageing population, complicated relations with Russia and Turkey, terrorist attacks connected with the activities of the Islamic State and most currently, the strong immigration flow – are raising concerns and leading to significant political radicalisation and social unrest. On the one hand, this challenging period raises feelings of uncertainty: Are we moving from solid to “liquid times”? What will “Europe” mean in the future? How does all this influence our everyday lives? On the other hand, this “Age of Uncertainty” is an ideal time to revise common approaches and look for new perspectives. We will, together, analyse and discuss the current development of Europe in an inspiring environment made up of students coming from countries all over the world.

Period of Summer University: September 9th – September 23rd, 2017
The application process has just started. They look forward to receiving your application!

On 23 June 2017 the Conference "Subaltern Women’s Narratives: Subversion, Resilience, and Shifting Responses" will be held at the University of Sheffield, Uk. Abstract deadline is 23 April.

This conference aims to look at the material histories and lives of subaltern women. In her 1988 essay ‘Can the Subaltern Speak?’, Gayatri Spivak extends the definition of the ‘subaltern’, going beyond “strict class analysis”, to incorporate a range of different subject positions, not predefined by dominant political discourses. We draw on her definition in our usage of the word ‘subaltern’, to focus on the experience of marginalised women in the present day. Most of the current academic discourse on subaltern women concentrates heavily on narratives of subjugation. However, the varied nature of lived experiences of these women has presented challenges in the knowledge and understanding of their experiences through an overarching critical narrative. The dominant approach of acknowledging only their subjugation eclipses the narratives of resistance and subversion by women. This conference seeks to focus on alternative narratives to such prevailing discourse.

The last date for submitting abstracts is April 23, 2017. The conference will be held on June 23, 2017, at HRI, University of Sheffield. Please send abstracts to: subalternwomen2017 [at] gmail [dot] com
