Welcome to an open Gender Studies seminar! Our guest are Sara Eldén och Terese Anving, Lund University.

Abstract:

Children are taken care of by nannies and au pairs all over the world. Paid domestic care plays an important role when families try to solve work/family conflicts, especially so when more and more middle class women take on demanding careers.

In our research project ”Care for children in an era of private market service” (RJ) we analyse the practice of doing care and family in families who hire nannies and au pairs. The study has been carried out in Sweden; a context where private solutions of nannies and au pairs have previously been uncommon due to the vast prevalence of publicly funded day care. However, the last decade, neo-liberal challenges to the social-democratic welfare regime has resulted in a (re)introduction of, and a growing acceptance for, hiring domestic workers. This, we argue, makes Sweden a particularly interesting case to study.

To grasp the complexity of this practice, we have interviewed all participating actors: nannies/au pairs, parents and children. This enables us to compare and contrast the ways in which the participants look upon and experience the caring situation in the family. Including narratives of children currently receiving care by nannies and au pairs is novel, and makes our research a pioneer contribution to the field.

Through making care the hub of investigation, we show the tensions between the role of nanny/au pair, and the actual relationships that this caring situation requires. These tensions are crucial to understanding the (im)possibilities of ‘good nanny care’, we argue.

“Right now we’re seeing human rights increasingly coming under pressure around the world,” says Morten Kjaerum, the director of the Raoul Wallenberg Institute. “A key challenge is how to reach a broader public to talk about the importance of ensuring human rights for all. We open the day at 11.45 with a short lecture and planting of a magnolia tree.

After a hiatus last year, it’s time again for Biology Day in Lund – LU350 anniversary edition!

During the afternoon we will open the Biology Department to the public, and you can participate in a packed programme of events. Don’t miss the Biology Show, with two exciting and family-oriented performances.

Or why not drop in for the chance to ask questions and listen to answers from our own ”celebrities”, Jessica Abbott och Marie Dacke. Professor emeritus Bengt Olle Bengtsson has also made a film about the history of Lund University. We will show the film at regular intervals all afternoon.

Discover our beautiful microscopy and other research photographs at our photo exhibition. If you are curious about microscopy and would like to learn more, there will be a demonstration of our microscopes. You can also take a look at our world-famous wind tunnel.

Our museum, Biologiska museet, will show parts of their collection and tell you their story. You might even have the chance to get to know some really “creepy” live animals.

You can’t have a Biology Day without a scavenger hunt. Come for the scavenger hunt and sharpen your knowledge of the living world.

The show and most talks will be in Swedish, but there is no problem to see the exhibitions and ask questions in English. All participants speak English.

Date: April 8th, 2017
Time: 11:45 - 16:00
Venue: Biology building, Sölvegatan 35, Lund

Gender Troublemakers is a feminist collective, which aims to offer an alternative and safe space to share knowledge, learn and reflect on the wide spectrum of gender-related topics and issues. Our purpose is to create an open and welcoming platform, where people from any kind of background can join and choose among different levels of participation, from simply attending our events to actively eng...aging in the collective’s organization.

Initially, this project started within an autonomous group of master students from Lund University’s Social Studies of Gender Program and consisted in spontaneous post-lectures meetings, with the idea to continue deepening our lectures’ conversations and discussions outside the academic schedule and through a feminist perspective.

Do you want to know more about Gender Trouble Makers and what we did during our 8th of March Solidarity Gathering and Silent March? Here's the official video of the event! Again, the collective would like to thank all the amazing people who joined us and passionately participated!

You can find the video here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bjhv2e1fq-o

Background: Increased migration flows to Europe have instigated political interest in combating the root causes of migration. It has also led to an increased focus on cooperation with countries that are strategically important from a migration perspective. However, what are the consequences of the current migration situation for the volume and orientation of official development assistance (ODA)? What can actually be categorized as ODA? How much of ODA can be re-allocated for in-donor refugee costs? How do different European countries, including Denmark, deal with this issue? And what are the consequences for aid effectiveness when aid is used for migration purposes?

To investigate the response of various European donors (Denmark, Sweden, Germany, the Netherlands and the European Union), the Swedish Expert Group for Aid Studies (EBA) recently commissioned a study from the European Centre for Development Policy Management (ECDPM). During this seminar the authors of the report present the main findings of the study and discuss the possible consequences for European aid policy in general and Danish aid policy and practice in particular with experts from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Denmark and DIIS.

Background: This seminar will discuss the political economies of humanitarianism from practical, political and conceptual perspectives. It is held as part of the PhD course ‘Body Economies’; a term that highlights the ways in which bodies are, on the one hand, constituted by and for social and political authorities, and on the other, are sites and means through which material and symbolic value is produced, transformed, transported, marketed and exchanged both by subjects/citizens themselves and by various external actors.

Humanitarian intervention in international politics takes many forms, ranging from medical assistance to victims of sexual violence in conflict, migration management of displaced populations, to the political administration of dead bodies. The crisis of humanitarianism is compounded today by the mass displacement of populations who seek asylum outside of their home countries or outside of the global South.

How do practices of care within this system contribute to the nurturing of some bodies and the misuse or displacement of others? How does humanitarianism participate in body economies, how is it subject to forces of capital, and how does it undermine its own premise that the suffering body speaks truth to power?

This seminar will bring these questions to bear on the topic in order to inquire into practical, political and conceptual aspects of humanitarianism and body economies.
