Clementine Thiers - Social study of Gender

My internship
"If you're really interested in an organisation, send them a speculative application."

How did you find your internship?

I found my internship through my own network -a high school teacher who was a municipal councilor delegated to Women's Rights and Equality.

What suggestions do you have for finding a good internship?

  • If you're really interested in an organization, send them a speculative application. It is not because they don't need an intern that they won't have you as one.
  • Don't hesitate to contact prestigious organizations: it's worth trying.
  • Pay attention to the kind of mission you will be assigned and make sure they motivate you.
  • It is good to think about the type of organization you want to work for. Working for a state institution is different than working for a NGO or for an association

Which of your responsibilities were the most interesting and challenging? Can you think of some task you did not enjoy doing while on internship?

The responsibilities that were challenging included creating a leaflet about the resource-places for victims of violence, and organizing several events about women's rights. A task I did not enjoy was to type meeting reports (but someone has to do it).

Would you recommend students to do an internship? Why?

I would definitely recommend doing an internship. It is a good way to apply Gender Studies to everyday life, to draw away from theory. It also can give you confidence in your skills outside of academia.
