Soup Lunch at Graduate School
Autumn has revealed itself and winter is just around the corner. If this is your first winter in Scandinavia, you may be surprised at some of the changes around and within you. And even if you’ve been living here all your life, you may still be grappling with some of those murky feelings that can accompany the imminent cold darkness. We therefore invite you to come join us for some vegetarian soup and salad, also a representative from Student Health and the Student Chaplain will be there to talk about their work and the ways they can support you. This invitation goes out to several international master’s programmes at the faculty, and we hope you will take this opportunity to come in from the cold, warm up your bellies, and meet some of your fellow students while learning about some of the support that is here.

Seminar “The Legality of Transsexual Gender identity in Contemporary Iran”
Zara Saeidzadeh (alumnus from Social Studies of Gender), Research Officer, Lund University, Sociology of Law will present this seminar.
Title of seminar: “The legality of Sex Change and Reconstruction of Transsexual Identity in Contemporary Iran”
The Islamic government in Iran has legalized transsexual surgeries and introduced a legal process which leads to medical intervention in transsexual cases. This has allowed thousands of Iranian men and women to undergo sex change every year. This paper explores the social and legal discourses on sex change and transsexuality in Iran in order to examine if the legalization of sex change surgery has legitimized transsexual identity within law and society. The discourse on "gender identity disorder" in connection with sex change started in Iran in the 1960s, but has gained prominence among doctors, legal scholars and jurists in recent decades after the 1979 Islamic revolution.
This study describes how Islamic jurisprudence operates in order to generate legal rules through its internal and self-referential communication within the legal framework of Shari’a. Sex change surgery is allowed through juristic legal opinion in response to the existing social facts and norms, on the one hand, and structural cooperation with medical system, on the other. This has amounted to legally constructed “misrecognition” of transsexuals’ identity in society. Using semi-structured interviews, this essay explores how Iranian transsexuals understand and define their gender identity, while embracing modern interpretation of Islamic rules in relation to gender and sexuality. The results of the research show that although transsexuality, as an identity in its own right, is not legally recognized in Iran, sex change surgery is nevertheless permitted by fatwa. However, transsexuals’ narratives demonstrate strong agency of Iranian youth in reconstruction of gender identity through reconceptualization of Islamic laws.
Finally, the study throws light on the role of surgeons, who play a vital part in mediating the relationships of transsexuals with their families to jettison the heavy weight of stigma attached to the “trans status”. Moreover, transsexuals being aware of pathologization of their gender identities use this as a strategy to overcome social pressure. That is to say, the interviews show an increasing level of self-knowledge among young transsexuals, while giving cause to question the forceful heteronormalization by the government through surgery.

Seminar “Politics, History & Statemaking: A critique of cultural history”
Erik Ringmar presents a paper which provides a first stab at a question of historiography: to what extent is is possible to recover the lived experiences of people of the past? And if it is possible, how should it be done? He argues that the discipline known as "cultural history" is not up to the task. In the paper he sketches a line of possible criticism, drawing inspiration from recent recent work by Charles Taylor and Herbert Dreyfus, which juxtaposes cultural history and a phenomenological understanding of lived experiences.

Debate in Lund November 10
Welcome to attend next week’s Debate in Lund on The new scramble for Africa’s resources – looting or development? The debate will be held in English.
The outside world has its eye increasingly set on Africa. Farming lands and new discoveries of oil, gas and minerals have made the continent interesting again – not only for former colonial powers and the United States but also China and India. Under the motto “trade no aid”, Africa’s poor are to be lifted by trade rather than aid.Meanwhile, history shows that rich natural resources easily become a curse. Instead of creating jobs, better education and healthcare, large export revenues often lead to corruption, conflict and to countries becoming dependent on raw materials.
Who are the winners and who are the losers in the new scramble for Africa’s resources? Who ensures that the fortunes will benefit the citizens themselves, and what is required for a broad community development?
These issues will be discussed at a panel debate in Lund on 10 November.

SASNET seminar on Biofuel Development in India
PhD candidate Shveta Soam from the DBT-IOC Advanced Bioenergy Research Centre in Faridabad, India, holds a public SASNET lecture focusing on biofuel development in India. Shveta, basically a botanist and environmentalist, is currently a guest researcher at the Division of Environmental and Energy Systems Studies, Lund University, funded by a SASNET South Asian short-term fellowship. Her presentation is entitled ”Life Cycle Assessment of Biofuels in India and its Impact on Indian Biofuel Programme”, and takes its starting point in the decision by the Government of India in 2009 to mandate a 10 p.c. ethanol blending target across 20 states and four union territories, and its proposal to replace fossil based gasoline and diesel by using 20 p.c. biofuels by 2017.
