Seminar: Social Control, Livelihoods and Competing Norms: An Ethnographic Study of Welfare at Work among Street Vendors in Bogotá, Colombia Candidate: Ana Maria Vargas Discussant: Docent David Wästerfor
Millions of people around the world work as street vendors as a means to provide for their needs. However, most of them face exclusion and low levels of welfare at work due to laws that make their work illegal. This dissertation explores how law, as well as other social control practices, enable or constrain the welfare at work for street vendors in Bogotá. More specifically, this research answers the following three questions: (a) How do street vendors in Bogotá perceive their wellbeing in relation to their work? (b) How do street vendors experience legal and non-legal forms of social control? (c) And how do mixed-systems of social control enable or constrain welfare at work? The main aim of this research is to increase knowledge of how we can create a better situation and improve welfare for people employed in the informal economy, particularly for street vendors.

Next DPS: Eva Schmitz from Both ENDS - Small steps - what claiming women’s Human Rights actually looks like in Kenya, South Africa and India…
Eva will talk about the dilemmas facing local CSOs and international NGOs working on issues of gender and human rights. The Human Rights to Food, Water and to a Healthy Environment are internationally accepted and have been ratified by many nations. Yet what does this mean in reality for people living far away from the UN headquarters in New York? The global the run on natural resources puts communities dependent on these resources under immense pressure, with women suffering disproportionally from the negative impacts. Eva has been working with women’s groups in Kenya, South Africa and India to support them in claiming their rights. While this is challenging enough, engaging women in patriarchal societies brings its own pitfalls. Question arise such as, do women who struggle to survive even have time to claim their rights? Will their husbands and fathers react violently? Is the gender focus a Western point of view? How does one bring the men into the fight for women’s rights?

Seminar: Consciousness, conceptual agency, and the "unbinding" problem
Much discussion in consciousness studies focuses on how “inputs” from the various sensory modalities combine with “internal” brain processes to give rise to unified consciousness: the so-called binding problem. For a number of phenomenologists and enactive philosophers, such an approach raises a number of concerns.

Association of Foreign Affairs, Malmö: Challenging the UN Security Council's veto power
The United Nations Security Council is criticized for its tendency to get locked in disagreement when conflicts and catastrophies threaten peace and security. At the core of the criticism is the veto - the option for the five permanent members on the council to completely block a decision.
Daniel Kjellén, president of The Challenge Group, will give you insights into the mechanisms and consequences of the veto. He will answer questions of how and why the veto is used, and present his organization's campaign "Stop Illegitimate Vetoes".

Open lecture: The political is the personal: Women’s participation in Taiwan’s Sunflower Movement
The lecture examines experiences of ‘unorganized’ women who had never before actively participated in social movements. These Taiwanese women—many of them housewives—joined the Sunflower Movement, a large-scale protest against a trade pact with China, and a related anti-nuclear movement in 2014. Picking up threads from social movement studies’ micro-level analyses of personal experience and feminist concerns about women’s role in civil society, I examine these new protesters’ experiences, focusing on women’s redefinition of politics and practices that break the binary between the supposedly public and private spheres. I argue that it is not only their participation in street protests that take these women into the ‘public’ sphere. Their speech and actions in ‘private’ everyday life constitute a kind of social action that blurs the arbitrary division between private and public, staking out new spaces for meaningful feminist political intervention.
Chia-Ling Yang is Assistant Professor at the Graduate Institute of Gender Equity Education, National Kaohsiung Normal University, Taiwan She is currently a guest researcher in the Department of Gender Studies, Lund University, working on a project on women and civil society. Yang is also a researcher in the Department of Sociology and Work Science, Gothenburg University, involved in a research project on migration from India and China to Sweden.

Public Lecture: Entitlement Racism /April 19th
In the lecture Professor Essed will talk about the decades of UN declarations against racism in the 20th century, today we are witnessing, often unapologetic, racist discourse and images in the name of freedom of expression. This is not only a social media hype but also, and probably more importantly, an issue of political and other public leadership, which paved the way for racially offensive discourse to become respectable over the past few decades. While seemingly targeting foremost those perceived as Muslims, anti-Black racism is at the heart as well of the same phenomenon.  Entitlement racism, as I have called the practice of claiming the right to say whatever you want about ethnic and racial groups, regardless of the consequences, seems to be on the rise in Europe’s 21th century. Entitlement racism involves hurting and humiliating those perceived as religious, ethnic or racial Others. Humiliation, a relational phenomenon, has always been a key element of racism.  It is an attempt to destroy or violate the dignity of the racialized Other. While it can have the impact of repressing resistance and undermining the self-respect of the Other, it also compromises the dignity of those who humiliate. In addition, a sense of feeling humiliated can trigger unpredictable responses.
