Abstract: China has long been known for producing porcelain, and its most celebrated wares are from Jingdezhen, the city known to many as China’s “porcelain capital.”  Yet while Jingdezhen is renowned for making wares for emperors, export, and domestic consumers, the city’s porcelain industry has fallen behind newer ceramics producers in south China.  Central government officials removed from Jingdezhen the title of “China’s Porcelain Capital” in 2004, awarding it to the city of Chaozhou, which produces much of the tableware and sanitary ceramics labeled “made in China” today.  Since then, Jingdezhen officials, redevelopers, and entrepreneurs have reinvented the city as China’s capital for ceramics heritage, attracting millions of domestic tourists and thousands of artists each year.  In this talk we will examine which heritage locals promote, why, how, and to whose benefit.

Biography: Maris Boyd Gillette is a sociocultural anthropologist and filmmaker who has studied porcelain workers and entrepreneurs in Jingdezhen (southeast China) and urban Chinese Muslims in Xi’an (northwest China).  Recent publications include China’s Porcelain Capital: the Rise, Fall, and Reinvention of Ceramics in Jingdezhen (London: Bloomsbury, 2016) and “Muslim Foodways” in The Handbook of Food and Anthropology, eds. Jakob Klein and James L. Watson (London: Bloomsbury, 2016).  She works regularly with museums on exhibitions, public history, and education, most recently the Campbell House Museum, the St Louis Art Museum, and the Missouri History Museum.  Gillette has participated in numerous community engagement initiatives, including the community history and digital media project Muslim Voices of Philadelphia, for which she received a Courage in Media Award from the Council on American Islamic Relations in 2012.

Lund Contemporary 2017 is a weekend festival for contemporary art music, organised by Odeum and Skissernas Museum – Museum of Artistic Process and Public Art, both part of Lund University, together with a number of local and regional participants.

The weekend will include more than 20 premieres by music composition students from the Malmö Academy of Music and others. New music by mainly regional composers will be interspersed with modern art music classics from the 20th century and onwards in a diverse programme. Another theme of the festival is the interaction between music and visual arts, with a particular focus on Skissernas Museum’s collection of art from the World Exhibition in Paris in 1937 – an event strongly marked by the dark political tensions at that time.

Music composed specially for the World Exhibition will be played over the weekend. In addition to concerts, Lund Contemporary offers lectures and a panel discussion on topics linked to the theme of the festival.

Admission to all events is free!

Date: February 3rd-5th, 2017

Other News, Events & Opportunities in Details

The collapse of the state Libya after Gaddafi in 2011 and the subsequent creation of a breakaway “Islamic State” in Northern Mali by Al-Qaida affiliated Islamist militias in 2012 have brought the question of state fragility in North Africa and in the Sahel region high on the European security agenda. Seen from a European perspective, the collapse of Libya opened a direct route for ill-contained and poorly managed security threats from the Sahel region to easily reach European borders. In current policy lingo these threats are in particular manifested in three figures of non-state actors: Islamist terrorists and rebels, organized criminals and smugglers, and illegal migrants and refugees.

At this DIIS seminar we engage a number of experts and scholars on the Maghreb and the Sahel to assess whether and how state fragility in Europe’s southern neighbourhood regions should be seen as a threat to European security.

The seminar forms part of the Sahel-Maghreb Research Platform hosted by DIIS. The conference will be held in English and French (one presentation) and will be live streamed on diis.dk.

Participation is free of charge, but registration is required. Please use our online registration form no later than Thursday 2 February at 12.00 noon.

Date: February 3rd, 2017
Time: 9:00-12:15
Location: DIIS ∙ Danish Institute for International Studies Auditorium, Gl. Kalkbrænderi Vej 51A, 2100 Copenhagen
